De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)’s biggest-ever overseas visit to New York has been such a success that plans have been announced to do it all again – this time in Berlin.
Preparations are under way to take students to the German capital in May/June, allowing first and second years to go abroad after they finish their exams.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard announced the next major #DMUglobal visit while in New York last week, where 1,087 students and staff from 17 courses spent a week taking part in academic activities and cultural experiences.
He said: “Following the huge enthusiasm for the New York #DMUglobal visit, I felt it was only fair to announce a new, extraordinary visit that all students would be invited to take advantage of.
“If possible, I would like to beat the number of students who travelled to New York and will work closely with the students’ union president and our #DMUglobal colleagues to see if we can inspire 1,500 DMU students to come with us to experience one of the most fascinating and exciting cities in the world.”
“There are so many academic possibilities in Berlin and a real opportunity for our staff and trip leads to devise more outstanding itineraries which bring new depth to their courses and add enormously to the student experience.”

DMU visited Berlin last year as part of the university’s #loveinternational tour launched in the wake of the vote to leave the EU Referendum.
#loveinternational has evolved into a campaign to celebrate and champion DMU’s diverse body of students and staff and the university’s passionate belief in the importance of engaging with different cultures through #DMUglobal experiences.
DMU teamed up with the British Consulate in Germany, Universities UK and the Government’s GREAT campaign – which promotes the best of Britain to the world – to host an event aimed at showing just how welcome and important EU students and staff are to the UK.
Links were formed with aid organisations and universities in the capital, while media interest on the visit saw Professor Shellard interviewed by the national daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
