The company behind the £3.7million refurbishment of The Venue@DMU at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has landed a major construction award.
Nottingham firm Stepnell has been rewarded for its craftsmanship by the Leicestershire and Rutland Local Joint Consultative Committee for the Building Industry, made up of architects, engineers, builders and chartered surveyors.
Operations and Commercial Manager Thomas Sewell said: “Our recent accolades are entirely about the craftsmanship and build quality achieved and we’re therefore absolutely delighted to see this acknowledgement of the expertise and dedication shown by the craftspeople working on these stunning buildings.”
The company have also picked up two awards for their work on University of Leicester’s Attenborough Arts Centre.
Since its opening in summer 2015, The Venue@DMU has hosted two rounds of graduation and matriculation ceremonies, university careers fairs, awards ceremonies. It is now hosting international jazz stars including Jeff Williams, as part of a series of events organised by DMU Music. Its first major event was the Investiture of DMU’s Chancellor, Baroness Doreen Lawrence.
Earlier this year, it was announced as a finalist in the best regeneration project category at the ProCon Awards Leicestershire and Rutland.
Umesh Desai, Director of Estates & Commercial Services at DMU said: “The university is extremely pleased with the new facility; the project was delivered on time, on budget and to the highest standards by a local contractor.”
Formally the John Sandford Sports Centre and a spitfire factory, Stepnell has restored some of the building's original features to protect its history.
