Generous Prayer Room worshippers donate hundreds to DMU Square Mile India fund

Worshippers at DMU’s Muslim Prayer Room have donated more than £870 towards university-wide appeal DMU Square Mile India.

Building on DMU’s belief that universities should work for the public good, the project aims to use the skills of students and staff to change lives in Gujarat’s largest city, Ahmedabad.

Its first aim is to support vulnerable children living in an ashram close to the slum of Ramapir No Tekro, providing books, equipment for sports and games, and medicine.

A collection was made during Friday prayers held for Muslim students on the last day of term. More than 1,000 people attended the four sessions.

In his sermons, Imam Mohammed Laher explained the new fund and told how it would help children of all backgrounds and faiths.

He said: “In the Muslim Prayer Room, we continue to pass the message of helping oneself and others, where Charity is very important. DMU Square Mile India Fund allowed me to encourage users to assist and partake in this noble project. £850 collected on one Friday afternoon is absolutely brilliant, and further donations have led to a total of £870. There is still a possibility of more contributions.

DMU Square Mile India graduate champions, Gracie Smith and Manissa Patel were there to answer questions about the fund and take collections.

Amir Mahmood, Outreach Co-ordinator, said: “It was unbelievable to see such a large amount of money raised in the space of just a couple of hours. The generosity displayed by the prayer room users highlights the power of diversity at DMU, with everyone uniting to transform the lives of the children in India."
