Double celebration for DMU Law School graduates

Students and graduates from Leicester De Montfort Law School had a double celebration when they collected awards as well as their degrees.

A prize giving ceremony was held just before the graduations to recognise academic excellence and reward this year’s outstanding students.

Family, friends and staff were invited to share in the celebrations for DMU’s talented students at a special reception in the Hugh Aston building.

Tim Hillier, Acting Head of DMU Law School, said: “These awards recognise some truly exceptional work that you have done throughout your time at DMU, so it is only right that we celebrate your achievements. We wish them all the very best for the future.”

Holly Whatsize, who graduated at the top of her cohort in Law and Criminal Justice, has already started a job working at a local charity, which works to help those affected by parental child abduction. Cases often involve family disputes.

Holly will be on the frontline as the first point of call for families contacting the service. She said: “It’s important to me that I can use what I have learned on my law course and help other people. It will be emotional but I am looking forward to making a difference.”

Charlie Reid got the prize for best score on the lawyering module. The aspiring barrister from Church Gresley, Derbyshire, said: “It was my favourite module, I liked preparing and arguing the cases and it was continuous assessment, so you had a chance to reflect on how to improve.”

During his time at DMU Charlie was the chair of Street Law, DMU’s student pro bono law group which helped raise awareness of law in  primary schools – which they did using a case based upon Disney’s Frozen.

Awards were also presented to undergraduates and postgraduates from the Leicester Business School.

Ashley Shepherdson collected an award for making the biggest improvement in his grades for BSc Finance – which ended up with him collecting a First. He said: “It was a bit of a surprise to be honest I wasn’t expecting an award! I’m really pleased.”
