CLASS OF 2016: Chris shows Enterprise to start career in car company management

A car-mad business student at De Montfort University is in the driving seat for a career after winning a spot on a management training course.

Chris Potter applied for and got a place on the two-year traineeship for rental car firm Enterprise, which could set him up as a branch manager for the firm.

The International Marketing and Business BA student graduates this July with first-class honours, and said DMU had helped focus him on the career he actually wanted.

He said: “Some people already know what they want to do, though I was indecisive, with no clear idea on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

“DMU, as cheesy as it sounds, came to my rescue. My lecturers, like Mark Prescod, helped me nurture a path I actually want to take the, giving me advice to follow ‘sweet spots’ in relation to my degree. Also, David Gordon helped me with the employability strategy and coaching.

“Cars are, for me, that sweet spot but they weren’t the only reason I applied with Enterprise. I felt Enterprise rewarded hard work and this was the place for me rather than an executive dead end role where there was no room to be promoted.”

Looking forward to his graduation as part of the new-look DMU ceremonies taking place at The Venue@DMU during July, Chris said his time at DMU was marked as much by the friends he’d made as the experience and skill he had learned.

He said: “University has not only provided me with life skills for the future, but also friends for life and moments I will never forget.”

During his four years at DMU, Chris bolstered his learning by completing a placement as a research and marketer for DMU, as part of the university’s Frontrunner scheme, which offers real-world work placements of varying lengths in faculties and departments across the campus.

Chris also took on a year’s placement at paper and packaging specialist Antalis.

He offered some advice of his own for students looking to do well. He said: “Anyone looking to get a first, my advice is to read, read, read.”
