Postgraduate students in the
Faculty of Business and Law not only collected their degrees this week – they also picked up awards for stellar performances on their courses.
WINNER: Hanna Reiman collected two awards for best performance on her courseProfessor Cillian Ryan, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, told them: “We are proud of the achievements of all our graduates, but we wish to celebrate in particular those of you who have contributed in a special way to the faculty.
“We are blessed with wonderful students here at De Montfort University and it is always difficult to select winners from the wealth of talent among our graduates. Hence these prize winners are a recognition of outstanding achievement and success.”
De Montfort Law School has strong links with law firms around the city and county as well as nationally. It welcomed guests from Leicestershire Law Society, Nelsons, Irwin Mitchell, Gateley Plc, Freeths and Weightmans as well as Thomson Reuters and CILEx.
Staff from Emery Johnsons Astills who attended courses were also given certificates of attendance. Trish Parmar was awarded Wills and Administration of Estates; Private Client, and Property Law and Practice; Jane Hinds for Wills and Administration.

Postgraduate coffee mornings explain more about further study at DMU Frances Ryan, who won best student on the graduate diploma in law (GDL) law conversion course. She is now studying the Legal Practice Course to become a practising solicitor and volunteers at Wellingborough Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
“I found it so interesting from the start,” she said. “The LPC is quite different from the GDL, it is more practical and more applied and you have to be more organised!”
Nastassia Kilkevich won the Irwin Mitchell LLP prize for best student on a part-time LPC course.
Originally from Belarus, she had a degree in economics before becoming interested in the law through her work with the legal team at Bedfordshire County Council. After a law conversion course she started the LPC and juggled work, family life and becoming a mum to complete her studies.
She said: “I like analysing different issues. I love law because my passion is for helping people. The lecturers at DMU have a real gift to teach. I’ve had a lovely time.”
Leicester Business School presented 17 prizes to students who had performed best on their Master’s courses.
Jasmin Taylor won best performance in
International Business and Finance. She said: “I’m really pleased, I didn’t expect it. It’s the most challenging courses I have ever done but I enjoyed it so much I want to do more studying!”
Emily Robbins, who won best performance by a student on
MSc Strategic and Digital Marketing, said: “I have loved the course and the ceremony was so much fun, very informal.”
Hanna Reiman won two prizes, for best
MSc International Business and Management and the Sue Owen Memorial Prize for best overall performance by a postgraduate student.
Hanna, who is from Finland, had only conversational English when she arrived at DMU and taught herself the academic vocabulary needed to study at Master’s level, supported by the university and the International Students’ Society. She said: “It’s been study, study, study! The first semester I found very difficult but I was determined, I’m so pleased to have won this prize. The International Students’ Society is the best!”
