Excited students at one of De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester’s world-renowned courses have seen their work displayed in one of the fashion industry’s leading lingerie magazines.
But that’s not all. The proud students’ cutting-edge work is also being displayed during the UK’s biggest trade fashion event, MODA 2016, when thousands of industry experts will descend on the NEC Birmingham to explore new designs.
The students will be on hand at their stand – the only exhibition space from a UK university – to talk to professionals about their work.
It means final year students on the BA (Hons) Contour Fashion course have been handed an incredible opportunity to be noticed through the feature in Underlines Magazine and the MODA show.
The students said they were thrilled to see their garments worn by professional models, snapped on location by a fashion photographer then displayed for the industry’s top intimates buyers.
For the second year running, Sean Goldthorpe, an MA Photography student at DMU, took all the pictures for the magazine and the display at MODA.
The annual project is a long standing one, delivered in conjunction with Underlines Magazine and the MODA organisers.
Student Megan Hall, 20, from Swindon, said: “This is really exciting that we are now getting to the stage of showing our work to industry and can demonstrate what we have learned and what we are capable of.
“We always make our products with a model in mind and this is an opportunity for our vision to come to life.”
Ellie Carta, 21, from Hinckley, Leicestershire, said: “Being involved with MODA gives us the chance to showcase our work to people in the industry who understand how hard we have worked and appreciate the technical aspects of our products.
“After working so hard during the course we have been able to see the glamorous side of being a fashion student, dressing the models and having our work photographed professionally.”
Megan added: “This is the reward for all our hard work and it has really motivated us all as we head towards finishing our final year collection.”
Gillian Proctor, Programme Leader for Contour Fashion, said: “We are a significant feature in the MODA show as we are showcasing the future of the industry.
“We will be showcasing the up and coming talent and are hugely grateful to the MODA organisation for their support.
“It is also important that MODA will give students the opportunity to interact with industry. Our link with this event has led to placements, sponsorship, job offers and media exposure as well as networking events for our students.”
Gillian will also use the event to showcase technical and design aspect elements of the course as well as the contour pathway in the MA Fashion and Textiles course offered by DMU.
The BA (Hons) Contour Fashion course was started at DMU in 1947 to support the local corset industry.
Contour Fashion is the oldest and most successful degree-level course in intimate apparel, covering lingerie, swimwear, nightwear and sportswear, and is widely regarded by industry experts as one of the best in the world.
