DMU's new campus features in showpiece video of Leicester

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)’s £136million campus transformation features in a new video showcasing how the regeneration of Leicester is changing the city.
 

Leicester City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has commissioned the video to show the work carried out in Leicester during his first four years of office.
 
It includes Jubilee Square, the Connecting Leicester scheme to link Leicester’s heritage more closely to the city, the first phase of the Waterside transformation, Haymarket Bus Station and developments at Abbey Lane Science Park.

The video is being used as part of the authority’s Invest In Leicester campaign to attract companies and retain talent in the city.

It showcases the pedestrianized Mill Lane improvements at DMU. Mill Lane, which runs from the junction with Oxford Street to the riverside, now features rain gardens, new seating and landscaping. It uses the same stone paving which was used to makeover Cathedral Square before the burial of Richard III earlier this year.

The fly-through video shows how the flagship Vijay Patel building, the new home for DMU’s Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities, will look when finished. Last week a huge TV screen, measuring 34 square metres, was fitted to the side of the building. It will be used to cover events taking place across the university, showcase student work and  
 
Sir Peter said: “My vision is to enhance people's confidence and pride in our city, because when people feel proud about where they live they become part of it.

“Over the next few years, we will continue to improve Leicester, adding to the wonderful regeneration projects that have already been completed.”  

The vast majority of work on DMU’s campus is set to be competed by the end of the year.

Umesh Desai, Estates and Commercial Services Director at DMU, said: “It’ll be a case of New Year, new campus. In January we will have one of the most impressive campuses in the country and it’s exciting to see it all come together after so much planning and work.

“Right now trees are going in, lawns are going down and plants are being bedded. Campus Centre is on track to be complete in December, with De Montfort Students’ Union moving back there in January.”
