Dissertation proves smart move for Psychology graduate

A dissertation about how anxiety and impulsivity are affected by smartphone use has helped Psychology graduate Mark Cox to land a place on a master's course.

Mark is delighted to have graduated from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) with a 2:1 and is preparing to study Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at postgraduate level.

He said: "One of my best experiences on the course was that my supervisors said they would like me to publish my dissertation results.

"This itself was such an achievement for me, particularly because I wanted to progress to studying at master's level."

Mark made his decision to study Psychology when he was completing his A-levels. He was adamant that he wanted to come to DMU and marked it as his first choice when applying for a university place.

The 21-year-old made the most of his time on campus in other ways too, joining in plenty of activities, including being a member of the music and rock societies co-ordinated by De Montfort Students' Union (DSU).

"One of the reasons I applied to DMU was because it had an Ultimate Frisbee Team," said Mark, who developed a passion for the sport while at sixth form.

Mark said he had also enjoyed doing voluntary work with charities through DSU Volunteering, and in his second year worked with lecturers as a research assistant in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

In his final year, he joined the swimming triathlon team and took part in DMU Varsity.

Mark also valued the quality of teaching at DMU.

He added: "What was particularly helpful was the fact that the course tutors were always available, and if I wanted to chat after lectures they were happy to offer support and would also respond to emails.

"The hours to see my personal and dissertation tutor were flexible, and if either of us was not available for any reason the tutor would always ensure alternative times or ways of communicating were found."

Mark said his time at DMU enhanced his job prospects and his chances of getting onto a master's course.

He said: "I believe the final-year options I was able to take, especially Work and Cyber Psychology, together with the Counselling and Employability modules, gave me the self-confidence and skills I needed not only to obtain a summer internship but also to receive offers from all three of the universities to which I applied for the postgraduate HCI course.

"DMU puts a great emphasis on employability and finding the right career, and I am delighted that it has got me to where I am now."
