Fifteen students from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) have been chosen to show their designs at the world’s biggest showcase for young designers – Graduate Fashion Week.
The excited students, all from DMU’s prestigious Fashion Design course, will be showing their designs on the London catwalks in front of industry talent spotters, leading fashion houses and journalists.
It is an incredible opportunity for students who are given an unrivalled platform from which to showcase their creativity and move into the fashion industry. A brochure detailing their work will be given to VIP guests.
More than 30,000 guests will attend GFW from May 30 to June 2 - including designers Victoria Beckham, Gareth Pugh and Mary Katrantzou, fashion director Hilary Alexander OBE and fashion photographer Nick Knight OBE.
DMU is one of 40 universities to take part in GFW and its fashion catwalk shows are always among the most highly anticipated for the creativity, flair and technical ability demonstrated by students.
SELECTED: Jack Dorman, left, with his designs to be shown at London
Jack Dorman, of Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, is delighted to be showing his collection in London.
He said: “It means everything. It’s the most important thing ever, it’s your stepping stone to the fashion industry and it’s going to make all the difference.
Holly Walsh, 21, of Hemel Hempstead, said: “It means so much, it would make the perfect end to our time at DMU.
Nadia Kelly, 21, has been inspired by Liverpool under Margaret Thatcher. Her collection references the 1980s and the fabrics and fashions used – including crochet pieces, which she has been painstakingly making at home.
She said: “I’m the first one in our family to go to university so to get to go to graduate Fashion Week and have my family see my work will be amazing.”

Rachel Witt said: “My initial inspiration came from a quote from Paulo Coelho - 'If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it’s lethal'. From this I have explored differences in lifestyles and routines and used a juxtaposition of fabrics, colours and prints to demonstrate this.”
Amy Jordan, of Derby, has created a collection based upon things which are thrown away, building the idea of disposable fashion into a collection deliberately fashioned to feel ‘rushed and artificial’.
“The biggest challenge was in adapting unconventional materials such as paper into wearable garments with professional finishes that complemented the design,” she said.
Graduate Fashion Week 2015 will be staged at the Truman Brewery, Hanbury Street, London. To visit the DMU stand and meet fashion students, head for stand F34.
