DMU Square Mile celebrates students with an international outlook

DMU is celebrating our amazing students who have transformed lives through DMU Square Mile. Today it’s the turn of the winners of Global Good category

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) places great emphasis on developing students who have a global outlook and are committed to the public good.

And DMU Square Mile Awards were the perfect place to reward those students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to those goals.

This year’s winner was Grace Broughton, left, a final year nursing student, who travelled to India to help build washrooms for a school in rural Indore.

Working alongside students from DMU’s partner college, Daly College Business School, they were able to transform lives of schoolchildren simply by building a separate girls’ toilet.

A lack of separate toilet facilities is the leading cause of girls leaving school, owing to privacy issues.

Students and staff from DMU headed over to India in March to start work. It is estimated that thanks to this one project, an extra 150 girls will be able to stay on in school.

Grace wrote a blog about her experience in India for Square Mile. She wrote: “Having never been to India before; we were able to go to numerous temples and here I felt I was able to gain full insight into the country’s culture, beliefs and way of life.

“The difference between the UK and India is indescribable, and that’s what I loved most about the country. I feel that this made the trip to India unforgettable and a really valuable experience.”

Highly Commended: Krishna Nama, who helped organise DMU’s biggest-ever Holi celebrations in Bede Park. More than 500 students turned up to the event, run by DMU Indian Society. DMU Square Mile provided staff and volunteers to help run the event, which was also backed by De Montfort Students’ Union.

“It was such a nice atmosphere. We got to know about the Square Mile and I realised they do so many things. I will be volunteering for them next year.”
