Students see their work in print in UK's biggest magazine for young accountants

Three students are beginning to make a name for themselves after winning a competition to have their article published in PQ magazine, the UK's top publication for part-qualified accountants.

All final year Accountancy and Finance students were invited to submit an article in groups on the current state of the auditing profession to Lisa Wakefield, a senior lecturer at DMU's award-winning Department of Accounting and Finance at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

Lisa then submitted three finalists to the editor of PQ magazine who selected the article written by Amanveer Dhesi, Farhan Chohan and Ahmed Dhada to be published in next month’s issue of the magazine.

Fahran, part of the group who wrote about the need to reform the auditing profession, said: “We were just surprised to be named among the finalists because to get yourselves published at just 20 years old is massive in this industry.

“We’re really thankful to our lecturers Lisa and Peter Scott as well because they gave us some really helpful feedback during the writing process.”

Ahmed added: “To win this competition I thought was really great because auditing is something I really want to try out in the future and having this published article will give me an advantage because it will make me stand out to potential employers.”

Amanveer said: “I’m very pleased to be published in PQ magazine because it’s a really good thing to be able to put on your CV.

“It was a great opportunity for us and it just shows how great the course is here, I honestly think the teaching has been exceptional throughout the three years and it helps you with practical work as well which will help us in the real world.”

DMU's Department of Accounting and Finance offers more exemptions and accreditations than any other university in the UK, meaning DMU students have fewer professional examinations to take on graduating - giving them a head start in the jobs market.

Lisa said: “This is a great opportunity for these students not only to be published authors but also for them to demonstrate to graduate employers that they have the ability to communicate complex concepts to a wide audience which will stand them in good stead for when they start to seek employment.”
