GCSE pupils are getting extra help to beat exam stress and last-minute nerves thanks to students at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).
They are being coached in stress-busting techniques and time management to help them better prepare for their upcoming exams and essays.
Students from DMU’s Youth and Community Work BA (Hons) have been visiting New College, Leicester, to run sessions as part of the scheme run by DMU Square Mile, which works to share the expertise of students and staff with the community.
The team of first-year undergraduates have researched different learning styles, to prepare for their classes.
Among the ideas shared with students were yoga and meditation to calm the mind, ball games and group work to release tension, and tactics to help plan revision time and tackle essays.
Julie Flett, senior lecturer and programme leader in Youth and Community Development, said: “This module gives them a real opportunity to engage with young people in a classroom setting.
“They have to plan the lessons, reflect on how successful it was and of course be able to adapt their lessons quickly depending on what’s happening.”
DMU Square Mile volunteer Peyton Malling, who has been working at New College and helped organise the lessons, said: “It went really well – the assistant principal came to speak to me after the session to say she absolutely loved it.”
Mark Charlton, manager of DMU Square Mile, said this module was one of several DMU Square Mile opportunities embedded within academic courses.
