Excitement is building at one of De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester’s world-renowned courses as 14 students have had their work selected to go on display in one of the fashion industry’s leading lingerie magazines.
To add to their achievements, the student’s cutting-edge work will also be displayed as enlarged photos on the DMU stand during the UK’s leading intimates trade show MODA at Birmingham’s NEC from 15 February. DMU is the only university appearing at the show.
CREATIVE CROWD: Some of DMU's final year Contour Fashion students
The fashion industry double-whammy is giving final year students on the BA Contour Fashion course an incredible opportunity to be noticed through the feature in Underlines Magazine and when businesses descend on the NEC in their thousands to explore new designs at the Moda show.
The students featured are thrilled to see their garments worn by professional models, snapped on location by a fashion photographer then displayed for the industry’s top intimates buyers.
The project is also a success story for Sean Goldthorpe, an MA Photography student at DMU who took all of the pictures.

The Contour students were tasked with their project before Christmas and had a week to determine their design concepts.
Selected garments were photographed on location in Market Harborough at Euromec, utilising a number of vintage motorcycles. The project is a long standing one, delivered in conjunction with Underlines Magazine and the Moda organisers, in particular Penny Robinson.
Underlines Editor Pam Scott and team selected 14 images which best showcased the competition’s requirements. The Moda work has become something of a feature at the February Moda show and offers a taster of the Final Collection work from the contour students which will dominate the Moda August show.
Student Alice Neves, from Matlock, Derby, said: “The show at Moda will be brilliant exposure for us all especially with helping us to find jobs. It’ll be brilliant to see how our work is received in the industry because for a lot of us it’s the first time we’ve done anything like this.”
Alison Hunt, from Dudley, West Midlands, added: “It’s really nice to get recognition for all the hard work we’ve put in, and to see it all photographed professionally is very satisfying.
“I’m hoping to get a career in the intimate apparel industry so it’s going to be brilliant to have my work seen by potential employers in the industry at the Moda show.”
Amelia Lohan, from Bolton, Lancashire, said: “I was really excited to be featured and rang everyone straight away to tell them. This is so good for building up my portfolio and getting my name out there. The course is brilliant as you get to work on and achieve so many things that just aren’t done anywhere else as there are just a select few of us from across the UK studying this subject.”
The Underlines Magazine shoot was photographed by MA student photographer Sean Goldthorpe, giving DMU another string to its fashion bow.
The BA (Hons) Contour Fashion course was started at DMU in 1947 to support the local corset industry.
Contour Fashion is the oldest and most successful degree-level course in intimate apparel, covering lingerie, swimwear, nightwear and sportswear, and is widely regarded by industry experts as one of the best in the world.
The Underlines Magazine shoot featured models Bethany, Chelsea and Tammy and was shot on location at Euromec, Market Harborough, Leicestershire with special thanks to Pete and Hannah Crewe. Make-up was by Laura Walton.
