DMU Professor is awarded the British Psychological Society's highest honour

A psychology professor at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has been elected a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Professor Rusi Jaspal has joined an elite group of Fellows who are elected for making a significant contribution to the world of psychology.



Prof Jaspal, who joined DMU in 2013, is Professor of Psychology and Sexual Health. He is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Psychologist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

His work examines people’s sense of identity and their view of themselves in society. Prof Jaspal has a particular interest in researching topical concerns which include climate change, terrorism, sexual identity and faith.

What makes his election remarkable is that instead of the usual 10 years’ practice required for a Fellow, Prof Jaspal has been elected a Fellow after only four.

“I chose to become a psychologist because I believe our discipline has the potential to bring about lasting positive social change. Indeed, much of my work has focused on pressing social and psychological problems that require immediate attention. So I am absolutely delighted that the British Psychological Society has recognized my contribution to British psychology in this way. I look forward to continuing my psychology research and teaching as a Fellow of the Society.”

It is the highest honour awarded by the Society, which represents professional psychologists throughout Britain. The Society works to increase the influence of psychology in society and works with UK Parliaments and Assemblies, non-governmental organisations and international bodies to ensure an effective voice.

Prof Jaspal holds an MA from the University of Cambridge, an MSc from the University of Surrey and he gained his PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London. Prior to taking up his post at DMU, Prof Jaspal completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Nottingham.

Prof Jaspal is an associate editor of the Journal of Social and Political Psychology and book reviews editor of Israel Affairs, and he serves on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Social Psychology and Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology. In his capacity as a psychologist, he serves on the board of trustees for the LGBT Foundation and on the medical board of NAZ: Sexual Health for Everyone.
