Professor Peter Sommer – a globally recognised expert in computer threat – has joined De Montfort University’s Cyber Security Centre.
An adviser to governments, stock exchanges, large companies and insurance companies on systems risk, Professor Sommer is the author of Digital Evidence, Digital Investigation and E-Disclosure: A Guide to Forensic Readiness, and the co-author of a recent OECD study Reducing Systemic Cyber Security Risk. He has taken part in the work of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force, is a former Parliamentary Specialist Adviser and has provided evidence to the Commons Science and Technology Select Committee’s enquiries into Scientific Advice and Evidence in Emergency and Malware and CyberCrime.
He has also acted as an expert in many important criminal and civil court proceedings where digital evidence has been a key issue. Cases include terrorism, global computer intrusions, paedophiliac "clubs", money laundering, phishing, immigration frauds, internet defamation, crimes against humanity and multiple murder.
On joining De Montfort University (DMU) as a Visiting Professor, he said: “I am very pleased to have been invited to join DMU. The facilities and research are highly impressive and practical, and I hope to be able to contribute both to the research and the development of courses.”
DMU’s Cyber Security Centre is a hub of expertise in the prevention of e-crime, cyber-defence and digital forensics. The Centre’s Director, Dr Tim Watson, said of Professor Sommer’s appointment: "I am absolutely delighted that Peter has agreed to join our team. His exceptional experience and expertise are recognised worldwide. We are fortunate indeed to welcome him and I look forward to working alongside him on a wide variety of projects."
